Empowering Lives, One Pad at a Time: A Giving Tree Initiative for the month of January, 2024 ❤️
In this remarkable campaign, Giving Tree NGO alongwith visionary founder of SoHFIT- Mr. Sohrab Khushrushahi are addressing a critical challenge faced by economically disadvantaged communities: access to sustainable menstrual hygiene products. We are launching a fundraising initiative to distribute reusable sanitary cloth pads to 500 underprevilidged women, empowering them with dignity, health & sustainability.
The Challenge: Addressing Menstrual Inequity
Globally, over 500 million women and girls lack access to adequate menstrual hygiene facilities, according to UNICEF. In economically disadvantaged communities, the cost of disposable sanitary products often forces women to resort to unhygienic alternatives like rags, newspapers, or even leaves, leading to health risks such as infections and discomfort. Additionally, the environmental impact of single-use sanitary pads—most of which contain up to 90% plastic—cannot be ignored. Every year, approximately 12 billion sanitary pads end up in landfills or oceans, taking 500-800 years to decompose.
Why Reusable Cloth Pads?
Reusable sanitary cloth pads present a game-changing solution:
1. Cost-Effective: Each cloth pad can last up to 3-5 years, making them far more affordable over time than disposable products.
2. Eco-Friendly: By switching to reusable pads, a single woman can prevent approximately 16,800 disposable pads from being discarded over her lifetime.
3. Health Benefits: Made from breathable, natural materials, cotthon cloth pads reduce the risk of rashes, infections, and other health issues associated with synthetic products.
4. Empowering Women: Access to sustainable menstrual products improves school attendance, work participation, and overall quality of life for women and girls.
We aim to distribute 500 packs (each pack containing 8 reusable sanitary cloth pads) to 500 women and girls in underprivileged communities ensuring 3-5 years of safe and sustainable menstrual hygiene. Each pack costs ₹410, and the total campaign cost is ₹2,05,000
We’ve partnered with Kolkata-based Fabpad, a leader in sustainable menstrual hygiene. Their high-quality, eco-friendly products align perfectly with our mission to promote sustainable living practices.
